SADiE
Sadie paused, listened and continued moving at a slow, cautious pace. Her feet felt light in the morning air, but her mind told her to be careful, and so careful it was. She couldn't hear the steady flow of the lake, washing calmingly up to the sandy shore and that made her uneasy. So, she scooted her way over to the stray lands, a place that she had never ever been before. It was scary, for she had no idea what to expect. Were there loads of strays, piled up and fighting, or was it a peaceful place? There was only one way to find out...go there.
The drought had made it hard on the few Skye members. The water was their symbol, almost, and it was hard to live without it. The lake that dropped dead center of their territory was dried up, the few fish that had lived there were dead and deer and rabbits were getting scarce. The lake had been their best hunting grounds because the water that lapped the shore was the sweetest in all of the territories. It was cold and crisp, sour but daringly sweet and totally irresistible. Now it was gone, thanks to the warm winter, and part of the Skye pack had gone with it. Thank goodness for Evalyn having a day of giving, or Sadie's pack may have been wiped out. She feared, though, that their days of sharing were coming to a closing. More and more she saw Evalyn patrols watching her as she sipped from their water source. A battle was coming, she could feel it.
On impulse, she decided to go to the lake. There was hardly any water there, and the trip from Skye land to there was so long, that it couldn't be their water source. Plus, long ago, before she was born, the packs had decided that the lake and big oak were no man's land and to be a place were they could come together, peacefully. For the most part, it worked out, but sometimes, there were minor fights. If anything, The Lake would be where the fighting was going to happen, because as soon as Evalyn closed off their deal with Skye, they were coming here.
With a struggled sigh, the basenji girl climbed the banks down to the water edge. It was just a puddle, so small that she could have jumped across it and not get wet. But still, she put her front feet in and enjoyed it. This was her first "bath" since winter had started and it felt good. The water licked at her paws and sent a warmth up her spine. Did I mention that she felt good now? For the first time in months, I might add. Good is an understatement. Great is more like it.
